Time For Your Word Wall To “Bloom”

At this time of year, it’s easy to neglect the Word Wall (one of the most under-rated literacy tools, in my opinion) due to, well, everything that we are trying to cram in this time of year.

Take 10 minutes and brainstorm seasonal words with your students. It doesn’t matter what grade. When you’re working on writing, those words become “no excuse” words that students can be encouraged to incorporate in their pieces. We use our seasonal words in our everyday writing…from sentence strips on practicing homophones, to writing spring-themed Math story problems. See my original post on this idea called “Season Up Your Word Wall.”

A little investment in Word Wall upkeep will pay you back in spades. You’ll hear a lot less “howdoyouspells” (as I like to call them) from your students.

Yes, a 2nd grader brainstormed the word "taxes".

How do you like to keep your Word Wall fresh?

Happy Spring, Teacher Geeks!
